FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Here are a selection of questions that we get continuously asked about our products.

Is Biltong the same as Beef Jerky?

Most definitely not!

Even though both are dried beef products, biltong is cured and cold air-dried. This process ensures that our biltong retains all of the nutrients, protein and iron as opposed to beef jerky that gets cooked at a high temperature.

What is the best way to store biltong?

Even though Biltong is cured and air-dried, it’s still meat! Because our Biltong is preservative free, we recommend that it be stored in the fridge.

If you will consume your biltong within 3 days, then you can keep it in paper bag - this will allow it to breathe and dry out a little more.

Should you wish to store it for longer than 3 days, or you want the biltong to stay soft (moist), we recommend you store it in an air-tight container in the fridge. Biltong can be stored in the Freezer for up to 6 months.

Does Biltong mould?

In short, yes it can.  If you keep it out for the fridge an in a sealed container then because it is 100% beef with no preservatives, it will mould because the product contains moisture. If you have it out of the fridge then keep it for no longer than 2 days and in a paper bag that will allow it to breathe.

Is Biltong good for me?

Biltong is a great source of protein and iron. Our Biltong is high in protein, low in fat and preservative free. You do the maths!

How can I send it overseas?

Some countries have restrictions on various food-types allowed in - please check this before sending your biltong - trust us, it’s heartbreaking to give up your biltong at the airport due to quarantine restrictions!

Should you wish to send any biltong overseas then please contact Biltong Bullevard with your order and we will vacuum pack your biltong at no extra charge,

Is Biltong healthy for my children?

Yes it is.  Because biltong is 100% beef with no preservatives or artificial products, it is a very healthy and natural product.  In South Africa, mothers for generations have been giving their infant children large sticks of biltong to chew on when they are teething.

Is Biltong safe for my pet?

Yes it is!  Animals by nature have been eating raw meet that they would normally hunt for themselves. Biltong is 100% beef and safe for your pet to eat.  We do warn you though - your furry friend might come back for more and more biltong as it is 100% and not beef flavoured as many of their pet foods will be - we hope you like sharing.
